Manila - Philippines ambitious Menganti millions of gasoline-fueled tricycles into electric rickshaw. This action to clean up polluting mass transportation system of that country.
Benigno Aquino said the Philippine president, the first step is done, replace the existing 20,000 rickshaws across the capital Manila. Later, this project will be extended throughout the country.
This scheme is expected to make the country save tens of millions of dollars each year.
"This project is an ambitious plan several years in order to stop the use of gasoline and diesel in public transport and encourage substitution into alternative fuels such as natural gas, electric and hybrid engines," he explained.
Aquino did not give a definite timetable that program but as many as 20 units of electricity have been driving pedicabs on the outskirts of Manila. Asian Development Bank (ADB) is funding the initial phase of this project says, emissions of the transport sector accounted for 30% of pollution of the Philippines.
In Manila, vehicle emissions accounted for 80% of pollution. "Public transport is a major contributor, especially tricycles, jeepney and bus," he added.
ADB energy specialist Sohail Hasnie said more than 3.5 million tricycles operating in the Philippines.
Pedicab it produce 10 tons of carbon dioxide and set fire to nearly five billion dollars in fuel per year.
"Each 20,000 electric tricycles will save 100,000 liters of fuel imports of the Philippines and save U.S. $ 35 million (Rp303 billion)," he explained.
Although electric tricycles that use lithium ion batteries are more expensive, but the actual conventional rickshaw two times more expensive for long-term operation, he added.
